Can I be fired for refusing to replace a computer screen I didn't break?
A computer at my place of business was broken. There is video of me touching it, but it's a touchscreen monitor and there is no direct video of the screen breaking while I am dealing with it. I have now been fired for refusing to pay for it.
If- there is no evidence that you broke it and, if you were fired for refusing to pay for something which you didn't do, you have the right to sue for wrongful termination, defamation, slander ( if you were verbally accused of breaking it) liable if you were accused in writing of breaking it).
You also have the right to apply for unemployment benefits.
If you are certain that the employer cannot show that you broke the screen, and only then, I'd get an attorney and sue.
You would have an excellent case and could collect substantial damages.
People here have said that you can be fired for any reason but that is not true. If the employer's actions surrounding the firing imply dishonesty on your part or imply or state that you did something wrong, you can sue. You would be suing for wrongful termination not justified termination.
